St Editha's Story - South Windows
This window (the first window from the east) represents the marriage of Editha with Sigtrygg, Jarl (King) of Northumbria. The Left Panel shows Athelstan(e) taking Editha by the right hand to give her away. In the two centre panels Sigtrygg is seen placing the ring on Editha’s left hand. The panel on the right is of Ella, Bishop of Lichfield, in a gold cope, blessing the marriage. This was to be short lived, as Sigtrygg soon lapsed back into paganism and deserted his bride. At the top of the window is a Norse galley which was Sigtrygg’s emblem. At the foot of the windows are the heraldic arms of Sigtrygg, the donor Mr. Willington (as being a woman, Editha would not have had her own arms), Athelstan(e) and Ella.
