The
organ is fitted into the former St. Nicholas’ chapel. It
was installed in 1926 and cost £4,776. Built by Harrison
and Harrison of London and Durham it is a powerful and fine toned
instrument. Incorporated in its mechanism are portions of its
predecessor and the electrically controlled blowers are housed
in an underground chamber in the churchyard. It was dedicated
in December 1927 by the Bishop of Lichfield, Dr. J. A. Kempthorne.
The longest serving organist at St. Editha’s was Mr. H.
Rose ARCO, who was appointed in August 1886 and held the position
for 64 years until he retired in 1950. When the new organ was
fitted “everyone rejoiced with him that his hands were
the first to play the beautiful instrument which had been installed
under his supervision.” The organ is surrounded with
wooden panelling with a plaque in recognition of his 64 years
service. |
