The double spiral staircase
is an unique feature. The outer has 160 steps and the inner
101. It is honeycombed with passages and is actually standing
on three legs and a wall. The stairs may be ascended by using
the outside door in the South West corner and descend into the
main area below the bells inside the church itself. Similar
staircases exist at All Saints Church in Pontefract, Yorkshire
and in the Chateau du Chambord nears Tours in France.
The photograph above
shows the top of the staircase looking down.
