St George's Chapel - North Windows

This window is dedicated to the memory of Brooke Lambert M.A. B.C.L., Vicar of the Parish 1872 to 1878. He was born 17th September 1834 and died on 25th January 1901. The striking figures in this window were designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, the glazing being made by Morris & Co.

Diagonally across the lights of the window, written in Latin, are the first and second verses of the twelfth chapter of Hebrews. The figures represent St. George, St. Nicholas, St. Lambert and St. Martin.

St. George is from the dedication of the Chapel to St. George and Mr. Lambert’s efforts in promoting its restoration, as well as in the building of St. George’s Church, Glascote. St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, chosen because of Mr. Lambert’s love of children and his pioneering work in education. St. Lambert, chosen because his saints day, 17th September, was also Brooke Lambert’s birthday. St. Lambert was bishop of Maestricht and was martyred because of his outspoken denunciation of vices of his day. St. Martin, the champion and protector of the poor, was famed for his charity.
