The West Window

This window designed by Alan Younger takes its theme from the account in the Revelation of St. John, chapter 21 of the new heaven and the new earth.

“And He showed me the holy city, the new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God having the Glory of God; her light was like unto a stone most precious.. as clear as crystal… and the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God did lighten it.”

At the base of the window are the twelve foundation stones.
“The foundation of the wall of the city were adorned with all manner of precious stones, the first … Below in the third light a star, “I Jesus have sent my angel to you … I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star.” Above the foundations are crowns. “By its lights shall the nations walk, and the kings of the earth shall bring their glory into it.”

In the centre, below and above the transom, is the city pierced by the twelve gates, and at the gates, twelve angels… to the left is the angel with the measuring rod (v.9), “And there came out of one of the seven angels . . and he spake to me. . . and he that spake with me had for a measure a golden reed to measure the city.”

Above, in the two centre lights, is an Alpha and Omega representing the words of God the Father (v.6): “I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.” To the right is a white dove, God the Holy Spirit, mysteriously at work in the sanctification of the Church. The conception of the city “coming down four square from above …” is suggested by the four white shafts at the top of the four centre lights. Further focus is given to the angel as the golden measuring reed flashes across the city.

There is a large tablet telling of the unveiling by HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon on July 2nd 1975.
